Suelo is an authentic espadrille brand, rooted in Cape Town, South Africa, currently operating from a humble home-based studio in Windhoek, Namibia. We focus on crafting exceptional quality shoes in a unique style that is fit for everyday use. Recognizing the strain which irresponsible manufacturing can put on our planet, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint by avoiding single-use plastics, reducing waste and sourcing sustainably supplied materials.
Reflecting on the environmentally-conscious nature of our products and the utility-focused use that they are intended for, the Spanish word “suelo” roughly translates to “ground” or “earth”.
The defining characteristic of an espadrille shoe is a sole made from natural-fiber rope. Our soles are manufactured in Spain, the birthplace of espadrilles, by a family run business. The soles are made of a composite of 50% jute fibers and 50% recycled fibers, with a thin layer of vulcanized rubber bottom sole, for a combination of comfort, grip, and durability. All other materials (leather, thread, thonging, etc.) and equipment are sourced from Cape Town and Windhoek. Our summer 19/20 collection consists of six unique designs, crafted from an elegant variety of colored leathers and/or woven jute fabric. Most of our style/color combinations are only available in limited quantities. Every pair of Suelo espadrilles is packaged in a reusable drawstring bag.
